Understanding Food Choices: Why Certain Foods Are Excluded from the GHS Plan
To achieve your weight loss goals, eat foods that won’t spike blood sugar and trigger a surge in insulin. The foods in your Genesis Health Solutions (GHS) plan promote a slow, steady release of insulin, preventing the body from storing fat. We exclude many foods from our plan for this very reason.
Foods to Avoid
Certain grains, such as oatmeal, pasta, corn, and bread, along with items like alcohol, bananas, beans, dried fruits, grapes, honey, juices, potatoes, and rice, can all cause significant spikes in blood sugar. Many processed products also fall into this category due to added sugars. For instance, yogurt often contains so many added sugars that it resembles dessert more than the nutritious food it was originally meant to be.
Removal of High-Allergen Foods
Currently, we remove dairy, wheat, and soy from our plan due to their status as common allergens. You might think you don’t have issues with these foods, but many clients remain unaware of their sensitivities until they eliminate them, allow their bodies to heal, and then attempt to reintroduce them.
Food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances can lead to a myriad of symptoms and significant inflammation, making weight loss even more challenging. In fact, food sensitivities often rank among the top causes of weight gain.
The Impact of Lectins and Other Anti-Nutrients
Certain hard-to-digest proteins known as lectins and serpinins, found in grains and seeds, can alter your gut lining, complicating digestion. This situation often affects individuals with autoimmune conditions who struggle with grains and seeds.
Legumes, including beans, peas, and peanuts—considered seeds—should also get removed for the same reasons.
Understanding Gluten and Inflammation
For those who are gluten sensitive, consuming gluten triggers an inflammatory response that raises cortisol levels, your body’s stress hormone. Elevated cortisol increases insulin production, making it easier for the body to store visceral fat. This type of fat accumulates around critical organs, such as the heart, liver, pancreas, and kidneys.
Every time cortisol levels rise to combat inflammation, the liver releases sugar into the bloodstream. Consequently, you need more insulin to manage this excess sugar, resulting in increased fat storage and perpetuating a vicious hormonal cycle.
The Issues with Soy
Soy ranks among the most genetically modified foods available and contains high levels of phytoestrogens—plant-derived estrogens that mimic human estrogen. Excessive intake of soy can affect estrogen activity in your body, complicating your weight loss efforts. Weight loss involves more than simply eating less; understanding how foods impact your hormonal balance remains crucial.
Alcohol’s Role in Weight Gain
A common question is, “Why can’t I drink alcohol?” When you consume alcohol, your body prioritizes it as an energy source over carbohydrates and fats. This means that any excess carbs and fats likely get stored as fat since your body already received its energy from alcohol.
Embracing Understanding Over Restriction
We hope this clarifies why certain foods remain excluded from the Genesis plan. Understanding the science behind your dietary choices enables you to view your journey as more than just a series of restrictions. It’s not about counting calories; it’s about how foods impact your body chemistry. Embrace this knowledge as you move toward better health and lasting weight loss.
