Fibromyalgia

According to the National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA), about 12 million people in the United States and 3-6% of the world’s population suffer with Fibromyalgia, 85-90% of which are women, making it one of the most common chronic pain conditions. While the severity of symptoms can vary from person to person, they can also disappear and return without any particular cause.

The American College of Rheumatology cites diagnostic criteria of Fibromyalgia as widespread pain in all four quadrants of the body for a minimum of three months, along with pain in 11 out of 18 designated tender points when a specific amount of pressure is applied.

These tender points, found over the neck, back, chest, elbows, hips, buttocks and knees, are typically no larger than a penny, and cause a person to pull away due to pain when even light pressure is administered.

Common Symptoms

Although chronic wide-spread pain is the most common complaint, several other symptoms can be present, such as:

  • Moderate to severe fatigue
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Sleep disorders
  • Brain fog
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Cramping in the lower abdomen
  • Morning stiffness
  • Painful menstrual periods
  • Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
  • Environmental sensitivities

In addition to these symptoms, it is not uncommon for Fibromyalgia sufferers to experience co-existing conditions, such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, endometriosis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), interstitial cystitis (chronic bladder pain) and TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction).

Finding the Cause

Mayo Clinic states there is no direct or singular known cause of Fibromyalgia, however, Dr. Josh Axe, who runs one of the largest functional medicine clinics in the world, states that there is a definite link between the condition and the following:

• Genetics

• Allergies to chemicals

• Food sensitivities or allergies

• Viruses

• Hormonal imbalances

• Poor digestion

• Candida overgrowth

• Spinal misalignments

• Stress

• Neurotransmitter deficiencies

• Stress

• PTSD

Treatment Options

At the present time, the traditional approach for treating Fibromyalgia is by treating symptoms with a variety of medications. While these medications may offer some relief, they are not a cure and can cause potentially serious side effects. Typical medications used in the treatment of Fibromyalgia include pain relievers, NSAIDS (nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs), antidepressants and even anti-seizure drugs.

The late Dr. John Lowe, a long time thyroid and Fibromyalgia practitioner and researcher, was recognized as a leading expert in the treatment of thyroid disease with natural medicine. He was not only very successful in treating Hypothyroidism and Thyroid Hormone Resistance naturally, but also in making the connection of Thyroid Disease to Fibromyalgia. He is responsible for discovering inadequate thyroid hormone regulation as one of the primary underlying factors in many patients with Fibromyalgia.

Addressing nutritional components are also extremely important when dealing with Fibromyalgia. Functional medicine and Alternative doctors have been very successful in greatly reducing the symptoms of Fibromyalgia by using a multi-therapeutic approach, including addressing food sensitivities and allergies, nutritional deficiencies and regulating hormones.

This is yet another testimony to the fact that achieving true health is based on a few core principles. Although it may be necessary to address individual aspects of any condition, the vast majority of illnesses can be addressed using the same therapeutic approach. This is why Genesis Health Solutions has been so successful in helping our patients obtain relief from the pain and other host of symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia.
